The Best Folding Bed For Guests

The Best Folding Bed For Guests

Last updated: May 3, 2017 We spent a few nights and over 20 hours testing and researching the best folding bed for guests and our winner is the iBED.  The iBED offers a complete sleeping package for your guests in a way that some on our list cannot.  You’ll see it makes total sense for your tiny home by having the ability to be hidden in a number of areas; under your bed, behind furniture, or under the steps.  But not only that, it’s very comfortable!  It can accommodate the average person’s height and much, much more!  No dangling feet at the end of the iBED, just sweet dreams and a good night’s sleep.

All of the best folding beds for guests you see here are geared toward tiny homes but work great for full-sized homes and apartments too.  They will easily store in standard storage areas and some are beneficial to the family shoppers with their multiple uses.

Our Pick – iBED

  • Laid Out Length: 74.5 Inches (6′ 2.5″)
  • Mattress Thickness: 2 Inches
  • Folded Length: 37 Inches
  • Folded Thickness: 5.5 inches
  • Frame: Steel

The iBED is a functional dream; offering comfort in something you can easily forget about when you store it away.  The pictures don’t do its unfolded size justice.  This is a large, yet compact, folding guest bed. And when size is a focal point in your search, it’s easily the best folding guest bed to us because of that.  Many of us have slept on floors, lumpy sofas, or worse and the iBED fills that gap perfectly if a spare bedroom or second mattress isn’t available.  The price is also much less than a traditional spare bed or mattress, too  Or if you’re hitting the road or heading out camping, the iBED makes for a great night sleep on a bed instead of the ground.  After the age of 25, sleeping on the ground (even with a sleeping bag) just isn’t an option anymore.  Give yourself something excellent to snooze on instead!

  • bosalyn: “This bed is perfect for what I need it for. It has nice support for the foam cushion. The set up takes less than two minutes.”
  • SmartCookie: “Received folding bed promptly after ordering. Set up was easy right out of the box and even my son who is 6’3″ found it comfortable. I got it to occasionally sleep in front of the woodstove which works well as it is very compact and folds easily to store behind a chair.”
  • americangirl: “You know… for a portable, hideaway bed, this really is great! we live in a tiny condo with no room for extra things. We keep the mattress under our bed, and the frame in a closet.”

Milliard Twin XL Tri-Fold Folding Mattress

  • Laid Out Length: 78 inches (6′ 6″)
  • Mattress Thickness: 4.5 inches
  • Folded Length: 38 inches
  • Folded Thickness: 14 inches
  • Frame: N/A

Switching gears to look at a couple of unique options, the Milliard Twin XL Tri-Fold Folding Mattress falls into our multi-use category.  This means it is more than just a bed, but also as a chair or sitting surface.  A folding bed like this might be more suited for young ones and children but they are undoubtedly comfortable to sleep on as an adult.  The great thing about these folding mattresses is that they’re available in 3 sizes; twin (seen above), queen, and toddler.  The twin is the size we chose as its competitors are around the twin-size length as well.  We prefer the Milliard option over the next folding bed on our list because of the Velcro straps to hold the bed into its couch or chair form.  Overall it’s a great folding bed, especially for the kids!

See what others think:

  • Kathryn J: “I ordered one of these to use for the grandchildren. I was so delighted that I immediately ordered a second one. The are very comfortable, I have slept on it several times when I was visiting another home.
  • Beth D: “This was exactly what I expected and needed. I’m using it as a futon chair in my home office. It’s perfect for me to sit on for long periods, and I like being low to the floor.”
  • kj900: “This is perfect for my studio apartment. It is very versatile and I have folded and used it in 3-4 different shapes. It’s firmest when you fold it up as a sofa (as in the picture), but drop the back rest, to make a double-mattress of sorts. Even that size is big enough to sleep on.”

Lucid 4″ Folding Mattress Sofa

  • Laid Out Length: 75 Inches (6′ 3″)
  • Mattress Thickness: 4 inches
  • Folded Length: 39 inches
  • Folded Thickness: 12 inches
  • Frame: N/A

Next on our list of the best folding bed for guests, and similar to our last option, the Lucid 4″ Folding Mattress Sofa is a multi-use mattress and doubles as a couch/chair.  While we like our previous choice to this one, the Lucid Mattress is available in 6 different sizes–three more available options than the Milliard.  With these options, the Lucid Mattress Sofa has the right size for everyone!  What we do like more about the Lucid over the Milliard Folding Mattresses is they fold up into an even, uniform box shape.  That makes it easier to pack away in an organized fashion.

See what others think:

  • Sarah J: “This matress was such a good choice!! Super comfortable to sleep in everyday. We purchased it as a guest mattress first. But I use it daily to lay down in my babies room to nurse her and end up often falling asleep on it.”
  • B. Perkins: “I really love this product!!!! It looks fabulous. I looks good in my room. I like it. Good product. Good price.”
  • mrjgc: “Excellent mattress, don’t hesitate to buy this. Skip the air beds, they always fail and never have the comfort that a foam mattress offers”

Zinus Sleep Master Folding Guest Bed

  • Laid Out Length: 75 inches (6′ 3″)
  • Mattress Thickness: 3 inches
  • Folded Length: 38 inches
  • Folded Thickness: 8 inches
  • Frame: Steel

Starting our “best of the rest” list, and in no particular order, is the Zinus Sleep Master Folding Guest Bed.  This model of folding guest bed gets back to the similarities of our overall pick, the iBED folding bed.  It is a framed bed, crafted from steel, that uses a spring system to support the 3-inch-thick mattress.  It’s very comfortable, in the upper areas of comfort to us.  Even if it were just the frame, you could make do without the mattress.  Yes, it’s still that comfortable.  The foam on the mattress is CertiPUR-US certified for durability, performance, and content.  The folded form of the Zinus Sleep Master is very stable on its legs but can of course be slid under other furniture.  Keeping you 14 inches of the ground, the Zinus is an excellent folding bed for your tiny cottage, lake cabin, camping gear, or apartment.

See what others think:

  • LF: “We have a super tiny little studio with room for only one twin bed. This folding cot was a perfect option to create a second sleeping area that can be easily folded up and placed in the corner during the day when the area is being used for other purposes.”
  • tati13: “It folds up so nicely and compactly. Its lovely. It won’t change your life or cure cancer, but your guests won’t wake up on the floor, taken out by a slow leak in an air mattress.”
  • Your Deity: “An excellent product that I would recommend.”

Milliard Lightweight Folding Bed

  • Laid Out Length: 74 inches (6′ 2″)
  • Mattress Thickness: 4 inches
  • Folded Length: 42 inches
  • Folded Thickness: 12 inches
  • Frame: Steel, Wheels

For our next folding guest bed we have another Milliard product, this time their Lightweight Folding Bed.  As you can see in the specs, the frame is made from steel and has wheels attached for mobility’s sake.  It feels more durable than most on our list and naturally has just a bit more weight to it–but it’s not overly noticeable.  But that shouldn’t prevent you from picking up this folding bed and mattress.  It’s extremely comfortable in addition to its durable frame.  With a 4 inch mattress, there’s no question it’s going to be a cozy night of sleep.  In fact, we think it’s the most comfortable of all the folding beds on our list.  At the end of the day, however, it’s not solely about comfort.  The Milliard Lightweight Folding Bed is more difficult to tuck away, and that’s where the difference is.  Should you be able to accommodate the extra size, we think you’ll find this bed is excellent.

See what others think:

  • L.R.: “Great rollaway for a reasonable price, delivered right to your door. Very comfortable twin-size mattress. Folds upright and in a relatively small manner so that u can keep it in a corner or store it against a wall.”
  • S. Oak: “So glad I bought this bed. Seriously contemplated it for awhile. But my son kept having friends over and I was tried of cleaning off the guest bed (clothes). We bought this, he pulled it out of the box and assembled it himself (he is 15).”
  • M: “Third time lucky – ordered and returned 2 previous foling beds – terrible!!! Have to be really careful. This Milliard bed seems to be good quality, well constructed and worth the money, unlike others. Well done”

Linon Home Decor Luxor Folding Bed

  • Laid Out Length: 79 inches (6′ 7″)
  • Mattress Thickness:
  • Folded Length: 44 inches
  • Folded Thickness: 14 inches
  • Frame: Steel, Wheels

Last on our “best of the rest” list of the best folding bed for guests, but not least of course, is the Linon Home Decor Luxor Folding Bed.  This is another folding guest bed that might be a bit larger than is capable for a tiny home, but is certainly something to consider as a guest bed for your apartment, condo, or normal-sized home.  It’s a very comfortable sleep and is the longest bed on our list.  If you’re expecting larger company, this is the guest bed for you.  Its length beats out all other beds on our list by at least 3 inches.  Like the Milliard just above this, the Linon Home Decor Luxor is a durable steel frame with wheels attached.  It is very easy to get around and tuck behind furniture or slid under stationary beds.  If you have a little extra room and a bit more coin, you’ll get a fantastic bed that you may consider taking as your permanent bed.

See what others think:

  • CindyJ: “We bought one over a year ago. Guests have been very pleased with the comfort and we love how easily it stores.”
  • Andrea S: “Quick and easy to put together with reasonably good instructions. I slept on the bed first, just to be sure it would be ok for guests. Even though it has a foam mattress (which I usually think are too hard) I found it to be remarkably comfortable; I slept very well.”
  • John Galt: “I have spent the past several weeks sleeping on this bed every night. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised.”

Milliard Tri Folding Mattress

  • Laid Out Length: 75 inches (6′ 3″)
  • Mattress Thickness: 4 inches
  • Folded Length: 23 inches
  • Folded Thickness: 12 inches
  • Frame: N/A

Milliard is on our list of the best folding bed for guests for a third time due to their very excellent, and in expensive (relatively speaking), Tri Folding Mattress.  It’s a no-frills foldable mattress and makes up for the lack of equal shape from their Twin XL Tri-Fold.  The mattress is very comfortable but struggles to be part of the “multi-use” crowd.  You could turn this into something like a footrest or chair, but it’s not as practical for that.  The padding is 4 inches thick, making it very comfortable to sleep on, certainly more so than the floor.  If simple and comfort is your target, check out what this folding mattress has to offer.

See what others think:

  • Greg S.: “I have a somewhat primitive hunting cabin that I built bunks in and have been screwing around with foam pads, egg crate Styrofoam, hiking pads and this allowed me to get rid of all that. You could sleep on any hard surface at all and feel like you slept in a real bed. Huge improvement”
  • Jason: “Love this! Bought it for visiting my brother and had it shipped there. Kind of firm at first but I came to love it after just one night.”
  • Amazon Customer: “School-related circumstances left me sleeping some days on my friend’s living room floor, far from the comfort of my own bed. Interestingly, this mattress allows me to have the same, if not better sleep than sleeping in my own memory foam queen bed!”

Coleman ComfortSmart Cot

  • Laid Out Length: 69 inches (5′ 9″)
  • Mattress Thickness: 2 inches
  • Folded Length: 34.5 inches
  • Folded Thickness: 5.5 inches
  • Frame: Steel

The final budget pick on our list of the best folding bed for guests is the tried and true Coleman ComfortSmart Cot.  For a straightforward cot/foldable bed, it’s old reliable.  It resembles many of the aspects of our overall pick, the iBED, with it’s slim folded profile and comfort.  Where the Coleman falls a tad short is in it’s overall length, which is the shortest on our list.  However, that’s to be expected on a bed that is less expensive than our top pick.  The ComfortSmart simply has less material.  It’s great for smaller and less-than-averaged size people, as well as children.  It also makes for a great foldable bed to add to the tiny home for potential guests and travel.

See what others think:

  • Kris: “I got this for my 5 year old because he always ends up sleeping with me. Now that I have this next to me, I’m not betting kicked and punched after he comes in. He loves it, and said he slept great.”
  • Sharon C: “No guest room and nowhere for my sister to sleep when she came to visit. This cot served the purpose, I ended up sleeping on it and my sister slept in my bed.”
  • mekea: “This item was a great thing to purchase since I had family coming to visit for a few days. It is a single bed and easily fold up and out as needed. It is lightweight and not heavy which makes it great for setting up and putting away when done.”
